MAY Prayer Pointers……

**Thank God for doctors and medicine; Ask God to give insight to the doctors in their treatment for Chuck Chaffin that he may be healed and free from pain. **Thank God for our children; pray for our outreach efforts to bring them the gospel**Praise God for His wisdom;Seek His guidance in your voting decisions in the primary election this month. **Praise God for good health; Ask healing for our members who are challenged by various illnesses: Wendell Harms, Tracy House, Chuck Chaffin, Jerelyn Carlson.

Ladies Book Club:

The group is meeting at 6:00PM on Firiday, May 30th, at the NEW home of Jerelyn Carlson (503-661-5422.) The address is 116 SE 8th Street, Troutdale, OR. Our assignment this month is the Mitford Series, Book #2, A Light In The Window, and #3 These High Green Hills. Once again we return to the small southern town and the adventures of Father Tim. He is married for the first time (at the age of 60) to Cynthia, his attractive neighbor. He has adopted a teen-age boy, Dooley, and a big dog that obeys when quoted Bible verses. Add to the mix a congregation of interesting people and you have a fascinating story line. We are enjoying this wonderful village and some have even expressed a desire to move there! Our menu theme for this month is “All American BBQ.” All ladies are invited to read the books, bring a friend, and come enjoy discussing the book!

Memorial Day began as a memorial for Civil War veterans.  It has become both, a National Decoration Day of family graves, and the holiday that opens the summer season.  It is celebrated with backyard barbecues, outdoor picnics, and parades.

Pester Pastor Thom

Question: I heard you read the book, THE SHACK. So, is this a good book for a Christian to read? Is his encounter with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit presented in a manner that is to casual  in relating to Almighty God? How are we to view this and other books depicting the story of one persons spiritual journey through life?

 ANSWER:

Is The Shack a good book for a Christian to read? Well, I am not a censor. In America we have fundamental rights such as freedom of speech, which includes the right to read what we choose to read. I can't imagine a Lutheran pastor making a list of banned books and telling the congregation "Don't read these!" Christians are free to read any book.
Literature is subjective. What we bring to a book determines to some extent what we get out of it. Take the book, The Da Vinci Code. Is that a good book for a Christian to read? I believe it is because it was a book people were reading that had a spiritual element in it that caused people to think and discuss with others. Was everything factually correct in The Da Vinci Code? No. Is the sa me true for The Shack? I think so. I believe it is good to read literature in order to further conversations with others about spiritual things.

Is Mack's encounter with the Triune God too casual? I don't think so. Jesus was accused of being too casual with His Heavenly Father. Jesus called Him "Abba", which means papa or dad.

How are we to view novels about people's spiritual journey through life? Well, people may have very different reactions to an authors work. I believe that reading about another's spiritual journey should cause us to reflect on our own journey story. Thom
